Ok so can someone genuinely tell me how exactly Sydney Sweeney’s jean ad was joking about genetic superiority and eugenics? Because I’m really not getting that.. I’m genuinely asking because I want to be progressive and mindful but I really don’t see it..

the whole tagline of the ad is that “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans (genes)” and she’s a pretty, blonde, blue-eyed white woman, so the implication is that her genes are better than other groups. it’s not supposed to be overt, but a lot of people think American Eagle worded it that way to drum up outrage for engagement.

She has big tits. That’s literally it. People like to read too much into stuff

Saying you have great genes at a time where ICE raided whole buildings, taking people into the cold night air with little clothing because of skin color was a little tone deaf IMO

The ad said she had good jeans as a pun for genes. Saying the stereotypipical white blonde tall woman has “good genes” is inherently problematic

Yeah I’m pretty sure they just meant “Sydney Sweeney is popular and looks hot…what makes people look hot are their genes… and we sell jeans holy crap that would make a great ad” and it spiraled

Unless one has genetic disorders, no one’s genes should be considered better/worse than others.
