Like the project or medium. Art class isn't just a free period to draw. You learn skills and a bit of history. Again, it's a CLASS. I get why parents may push their kids to persue art classes if they draw really well or kids will take it cause they love to draw, but if the kid doesn't want to learn about techniques and would rather stick to their niche, then art class isn't for them.
As another art teacher, I agree. I would totally understand if it’s a prerequisite to get to a class that teaches that one medium they want to do but if it’s not, then they have to realize that it’s still a class where you have to LEARN!! And it’s not just making art, but the history of art and their artists!! Sincerely, and art history loving art teacher~
NTA. Former math teacher here (getting a higher degree rn) I get it. It’s like any other class where they don’t want to do what doesn’t interest them. I usually tell my kids that everything is for the purpose of expanding their critical thinking, overall skills and working the brain to make them smarter in general. They know and acknowledge I’m right but they still don’t wanna do it. Me neither tbh!
I get that’s your literal profession but they’re just kids! Art class is about drawing what they like and finger painting. May be the occasional project to take home. If you wanted to teach people who are dedicated and invested in art, you need to teach at high school if not college level. I believe that’s the experience you are seeking
So art class actually isn't about "drawing what they like and finger painting". It's about technique and exposing students to different media and styles. I believe that most projects should give students some agency, but we need them to do certain things to show off specific techniques. Also I'm not talking about wanting to teach students who are dedicated and invested in art, I'm talking about students who enjoy art marking, but only when it's what they want to make and nothing else.
This is such a tired and stupid take. You don’t have to personally find value in every class but acknowledge it’s a class. Should students be able to write about whatever they want in English class? The project was a persuasive essay and they submitted Harry Potter fanfiction but hey students need to be able to express themselves! You don’t get to dictate what they write! In music class should students just make whatever noise they like?
