AITA For "controlling campers language"? I work with young kids and one thing I do not tolerate is kids trying to demean other kids by saying stuff like "You run like a girl" or "ew that's so gay". My coworker said that it's not that deep but I've done...

Literal research and reports on how that kind of language affects kids and their self worth later on in life. When girls hear that boys are being told they're not strong enough and in result makes them feminine, those girls often grow up to internalize the belief that they are less than. Believe me I trash talk my campers all the time in games, but I use language that doesn't demean a group of people...

I think you’re pretty clearly nta for wanting the kids to improve that mindset. If you’re just going “hey we don’t say things like that, girls run just as well as boys” or something and continuing on, that’s great and not too much at all

Nta I fear it is that deep and your coworker does not care about how the way they treat there job DOES make a difference and influences kids awareness is key !

nta. it is kinda that deep. stuff like that gets ingrained young, even if it’s just said “as a joke”. the little girls and future queers of america who won’t be hearing that def appreciate it

NTA!! Because if they said "you dance like you're white" or "you eat like you're _____" or "you smell like you're ______" then it would be a problem. We don't let kids insult other kids by putting down groups.

You’re doing the right thing. It can get in kids heads and some of them don’t have anyone else who will stick up for them. I have had kids bullied for things like stutters or being too “gay” who have thanked me for being in their corner.

You should tell them to use gender neutral terms and phrases such as “yo bro you lowkey bitchmade”

Plus it's so simple to not do that. Today a camper told me that a fish walks faster than me (and it was deserved 😔). Idk I feel like I'm doing too much because my coworkers say I am, but my field of study has countless data (and just general lived experience) to show how harmful this everyday language can be.

“a fish walks faster than you” should be allowed under the “as long as it’s funny” technicality. otherwise comparing poor attributes/qualities to specific groups of people is absolutely something you should get after them for. maybe even make it a lesson if possible to better explain to them *why* it’s bad to use that kind of language?

additionally your coworker doesn’t seem to think about anything further than what’s obvious on the surface 🤷 unless your manager or supervisor is getting involved and telling you to stop then fuck that guy

I always try to back mine up with logic, “what does that even mean?” Etc. Show them the stupidity of their stereotypes.
