They wore down on rough terrain

When they're roaming around freely, hooves get worn down steadily over time. And if there was some kind of problem... well, they just died.

Think of your dress shoes and how they look after a few walks from the parking lot

Grass and dirt don’t wear them out

I guess rough dirt and terrain to file them down but the ones that are domesticated don’t walk around enough.
