christianity (catholicism, protestant, jehovahs witnesses, mormons) as well as islam and buddhism. religions have been sending out missionaries to get new members for thousands of years

Judaism and Zoroastrianism are the only religions I can't think of that make a point not to proselytize. Every other major religion has a focus on converting nonbelievers, with varying intensity.
