Seriously, what are the pros to Ai?

the only "positive" is convenience, but it's kinda subjective

Streamlining mundane tasks but the algorithms used are subject to the same shortcomings as current data analysis methods regardless of what the talking heads may tell you. Mostly sampling bias, Simpsons paradox, ignoring outliers as errors, and preferring median to mean

Very helpful for figuring out why my code isn’t working, can help researchers find cures for diseases, convenience, endless books in your pocket

as an IS major- it is really helpful for quick code debugging but also really nice for creative generation and planning (like for my new video games). It is really helpful for a lot of things productivity wise and it is here to stay

The biggest pro of Ai is its potential. Ai is similar to the invention of writing ~ expression of ideas outside one’s mind. Compare how far that’s taken humanity, then consider Ai is just getting started.

AI would be better used as a single server date base for research information with no new creative options. It if it properly cited and used the correct information without plagiarism, I would see less of a problem with it. But alas, it’s also destroying our environment

This is like asking “what are the pros to airplanes” in 1900 or “what are the pros to computers” in 1950. It actually doesn’t matter at all if YOU think it’s “good” it is the inevitable wheel of progress that you are entirely powerless to stop. You can bitch and moan about AI for your entire existence, but the youth that will grow up only knowing a world with AI will see you as a decrepit Zoomer.

its google except it can talk to u and pull up multiple searches its basically just better google but obv its more complicated than that, plus researchers have been using machine learning models for a long long time, the foundation for the attention is all you need paper that google published has roots that date back to the 90s

any halfway competent sophomore comp sci student can throw together an app that can categorize cancerous melanoma from pictures with 80% accuracy, 95%+ recall in a couple weeks by transfer learning from SOTA image recognition models. with the actual pros doing it, CNNs and VTNs are revolutionizing detection of breast cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer. transformer based architectures have solved protein folding problems that we thought would be impossible to solve for decades

AI shill detected 🫵🏻 comparing ai (the thing that literally can only regurgitate what it finds online) to writing and expression (actual human creativity) is insane. One allowed us to actually share information, express art, share between cultures, etc. while the other organizes spreadsheets faster while still getting half of it wrong.

I more or so compare it to the early creation of the World Wide Web. It has induced the same mass fear but will eventually provide great utility once it gets heavily refined.

People comparing AI with *insert random invention here* when they’re not the slightest bit comparable is wild

Yeah people made this same argument about the internet, you are an ant that will be inevitably crushed by the unstoppable wheel of human progress

Read that again the comparison is Ai and Writing. Writing can be rubbish (like comment) or are master piece depending on the author. Ai relies on prompts by a human. If it’s so easy, make something masterful using Ai, with your original prompt.

listing “preferring median to mean” as a shortcoming is crazy work 😭

it’s not destroying our environment. the way we commute and the way we eat are destroying our environment. all data centers, not just the AI ones, account for less than 1% of our energy usage and freshwater usage. computation, including AI, is one of the only central parts of our current way of life that is actually sustainable.

The internet is also vastly different than “hey grok is this picture of the earth fake” and chat gpt spitting out objectively false information, or convincing people to off themselves. Like are we being fr right now?

And the comparison is absolutely dogshit lmao. So is “yeah well if it’s so easy youuuu do it” as if boneheads don’t do it every day💀 thinking that writing a prompt can be called a masterpiece is…certainly something.

Yeah bro clearing out massive forests and fields for AI data centers that ruin local communities water supply or putting them in the desert so it costs even MORE to get water to it is definitely sustainable.

you are just repeating disinformation. all data centers combined, not just the ones used for AI, account for less than one percent of both our freshwater usage and energy usage. the environmental concerns about AI are fake. and likely being signal boosted by the oil companies and farming companies that are actually responsible for the destruction of our planet.

Really? It’s disinformation that in order to build a massive datacenter acres of land needs to be completely leveled and turned into asphalt? Or that local communities end up with worse water quality, lower pressure, and higher utility costs because of the massive uptick in usage? That’s aaaaaaall misinformation?
