Just filed my taxes. Surprised I’m getting back 2200. Last year I had to pay 500. A lot more than I expected as a single person. Anyone else surprised with their return?

hey I’m a tax accountant and happy to help understand it if I can. did you withhold more on your W2 this year? how old are you? did you get any scholarships or anything last year that you didn’t get this year?

I had to pay 500 last year. My withholding has always been 50. I’m single. I just never seem that much. Ever. Taxes are so confusing

You should be okay. I forgot to file last year😬😬😬 but I still haven’t gotten a letter from IRS so I think I’m safe

yeah they definitely are confusing, you would have to look at both tax returns side by side and compare the numbers. See if your AGI (line 11 on page 1) went down at all. Also, the standard deduction increased by about $2K from last year, which is probably part of it if your income didn’t change much.

That’s why. My income is almost double this year than last so I’ll see how it affect next year’s
