there’s usually some difference, or differences in intention at the least. but at the point of it getting misconstrued or going viral, most dudes would rather just not risk it at all. even if the intention was pure, if it gets called as weird/creepy, walking it back is just not an option. “i didn’t mean it like that,” is just a dude trying to save the titanic after it already hit the iceberg.

I can’t speak for all men but for me the thought of being called creepy for trying to make a genuine compliment scares me out of doing so
