Can a civil engineer explain why power lines aren’t underground? No potential for trees falling on them, saves space, looks better.

Expensive to do and maintenance is way more difficult.

Well they would be exposed less to the elements underground, no? So maintenance might be harder but it would need to be done less frequently. And like one freak windstorm couldn’t cripple a cities power grid. Idk I just got stoned and thought powerlines were ugly 😭

They’re safer from most damage but anything underground can have roots grow into it, not everyone actually locates utilities before digging and burrowing animals can’t check. It’s also harder to access them when they need to be upgraded or when you need to make new connections to them. Once they get closer to the end users, power lines are normally buried.

Oh yeah it’s also way harder to find damage on an underground line, so there’s less damage but takes tons of time to even locate the issue before you can fix it

Interesting. Maybe only in big cities it’s the best way to do it, I just saw that china has been doing underground lines pretty extensively for a while and it appears to work pretty well.
