I want to quit my job but I’m struggling to come to terms with it. I used to love it but now my mental and physical health is so bad and it’s evident that they care more about my output than me as a human. Any advice on how to feel more ok about quitting?

What job do you work?

First, consider leaving; do not let a position restrain you if it no longer fits, particularly when it harms your mental and physical health. Prioritize yourself, since they clearly do not value you there, and you need not value them in return—it works both ways. Second, do you have another role ready that you can begin?

Start looking for another job. Don’t just quit without having a back up.

I know 🫠 it’s an on campus position that I have right now that I used to adore. But management changed and now I’m constantly being fussed at for minor things and I feel like no one takes me seriously. I feel infantilized sometimes. I’ve been the most responsible employee there for the past three years. I say one bad thing about management that’s taken out of context and now they legitimately won’t leave me alone and keep pulling me into the main office to “talk”— I.e be fussed at 😭

Honestly just leave and you’ll just have to hope you can find something quickly but if you’re on a college campus there’s plenty of jobs around

Yea that pay a fraction of what I’m getting. 😭 I got a pay raise and make $15 an hour but it’s totally not worth it anymore. Everywhere else on campus pays 7.25-12.00 at most… 🫠

It’s not just burn out. It’s their reaction to everything that’s been going on. It’s not a split decision to leave. I’ve been thinking about it for several months. It’s only an on campus position and despite once loving it it’s become something I feel trapped in.

In fact, I have a dr’s appointment Monday and got in trouble for taking the whole day off so I’d rather not work there any more if this is the way I’m treated.

Why’d you take the whole day off? Doctors appointments are usually 1-2 hours.

I took the whole day off because I am exhausted and deserve a fucking break. I work my ass off all the damn time and I don’t need to kill myself for a job that has begun to disrespect me. It allows me breathing room to go to the appointment (I have sever anxiety about doctors and must prepare especially when it’s about a potential chronic illness or mental illness) and get other stuff done. My entire life shouldn’t revolve around my job. It used to. No more.

Tbh, if you didn’t communicate that then you’re wrong. If I were your boss I’d be pissed too. Work doesn’t know how you feel, so you need to voice those things. You should’ve just taken PTO.

I have communicated that. This is a part time position that I’ve been working since my freshman year of college. It’s my first employment ever and of course I’m still figuring out the kinks. And I have told them. They respond that I must “look on the bright side” and only “think five minutes ahead” which is frankly condescending and unhelpful. And you’re very judgy for a person who doesn’t have all the information.

And I only work 3.5 hours a day. So like missing a “whole day” isn’t a typical 9-5

I used to love it. I adore working with clients and faculty… but management changed and now it feels like they’re targeting me and I don’t understand why. I’ve literally always been a good employee who does their job and doesn’t complain. But suddenly I’m doing everything wrong…?

I’m not responding to the judgy comment. You’d be wise to work out these kinks before you hit the real world. In the real world you likely would be fired - and what you took as condescension what a system created to protect itself from HR-related claims looks like. It was a professional warning of sorts. IMO, you should find some content on IG on how to navigate HR / corp structures and use this job as practice. Best of luck.

Truthfully I feel like they have only begun to have an issue with me once I’ve set boundaries in place for work life balance. You know little about my experience, about my life. I know for a fact I do my job well. Yes I have some kinks to work out but I don’t need the condescending attitude and the “I know better than you so let me educate you” mentality. I’m aware I still have things to work on: one of them being work life balance. I have almost killed myself semester after semester working.

But now that I’ve begun to make sure I’m ok to work; that I have the accommodations or resources I need— I’m a problem? I’ve been one of the best employees they’ve ever had— and they’re losing someone who is a great writing coach because they don’t wanna work with me to get those accommodations. I know I’m not special, but the management change and the subsequent dismissal of myself isn’t going to work for me.

I’m allowed to want the best position for myself that has management that actually cares about my needs.

Given that you're young and this is your first job - all things you've admitted btw - you should seek out content on how to navigate. There is an HR friendly way to set boundaries. I'm not saying you did or did not do it that way, but you're experiencing friction because of your actions. Also, fwiw, if what you deserve falls short of what the company expects you'll find yourself in the situation you're in now. Why? Capitalism. They know there's always someone who will do your job for less.
