My friend (20tM) is dealing with extremely strict religious parents who want to force him to go to church 3 times a week and have a 7pm curfew. He hasnt come out as male yet to them either. What are effective but low risk ways for him to set up boundaries

Everyone in this thread is smoking something bad. Sometimes coming out is not an option. I’ve been in this situation before and I can say that you need to do two things: work on it in the moment AND plan for the future. Communicate w your parents about how you are an adult and need to live a more independent life, AND start saving money and distancing yourself from their financial tangles

Move out and be financially independent of them. That’s literally the only option

He still has 3 more years of college and a full separation like that would ruin his family ties dawg

Then he has to put up with their conditions. If he wants connection and financial security rn that’s the sacrifice. What’s more important? The security and connection or living authentically to himself? You can’t safely have both. So he has to decide. It’s not fair, it’s shitty, but it’s reality.

Idk how much communication theyre interested in but we believe the fear of him growing out of their control will make his parents compromise to some healthier boundaries

It’s sad that he’s getting so many upvotes for saying someone should just deal with borderline abuse and not set up boundaries I have no real advice that just made me sad, hope everything turns out well with him though that sounds awful
