I think all my life I’ve defined my self worth around academic/career success. I’m realizing the negative impacts this has on my self esteem, physical/mental health. How do I start to shift away from that? What do I define my self worth around instead?

1: how you make people feel with your presence (good or bad? 2: how important you are to the existence of anything (pet owner? Owner of a plant or garden? Creator of a business? 3: Giver or a taker: do you leave a space in better condition than when you arrived? 4:doing good things (from the heart) when no ones looking. you can impress and seduce yourself your job, your money, your car, your looks, etc. you can lose these things over night, and your self worth will be lost with it too.

Life experiences, pick up a new hobby your passionate about and get good at it, make other goals/plans for yourself that don’t have to do with academics like maybe working out going to clubs etc and seek out opportunities to make friendships

To define self worth you must first know yourself. It comes naturally after you know who you are in a positive way

I think it’s positive to define yourself with work. I’d just keep doing that. It’ll work out as long as you’re successful.

I think it can definitely be positive for some, but is likely not the best for me. I have a sought after job in my field but im absolutely miserable. I deal with politics nonstop. I work late nights to play catchup. Tying my self worth to my job has resulted in justifying working way overtime to meet the job’s grueling demands. If my self worth were shaped around other virtues, I’d be willing to settle w shutting the laptop earlier, maybe not being 100% on top of work, but at least having the-

rest of my life back (physically/socially/mentally). Right now, if I don’t get shit done on time, I view at as an impact on my self worth. I should get work done so that I can keep my job, continue sustaining an income to support my myself. But not getting it done doesn’t make me any less of a human being. Investing in a career is important, but I think I have some work to do to dissociate the career from my sense of self.
