Genuinely I have no idea, what are gay rights? What can’t we do that straight people can do? - asking from a gold star lesbian

The main thing was the right to marry each other, which was legalized in the US in 2015. Also things like adoption, discrimination in the workplace, healthcare, etc

One case I can think of is the masterpiece cake shop case, where a baker refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. Even small things like that are different for straight vs gay. Of course LGBT ppl face less discrimination now, literally because of everyone who fought for those rights. If you personally haven’t been discriminated against you should be grateful to those who fought for a better future

How would my workplace know to discriminate against me when I haven’t said anything about it? I also can and have gotten healthcare just as easily as a straight person

Another reason that people don’t say things is because gay people are a protected class. It’s technically now illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation, which is another recent development in gay rights

Title IX has been around for a long time and is not recent

People used to get fired for being gay. Protection from workplace discrimination is a right that was fought for. And in healthcare, things like HIV faced so much stigma because of its association w gay men. Before they knew how it was transmitted, many wouldn’t even go near someone with HIV

Title IX has only protected sexual orientation since 2021

Granted, back then we didn’t know much about the disease, and frankly, I wouldn’t blame someone for not wanting to go near someone with it

Oh lol I meant to say wouldn’t go near gay men. Screwed that up. But like people treated gay men like they had the plague even if they weren’t HIV positive

The cake shop is a private business which reserves the right to deny business with whomever they choose. You are completely free to open a gay cake shop that only serves gay weddings.

I know, I read the case. I just listed it as an example of how straights and gays are still treated differently 🤷‍♀️
