How do you break up with someone and maintain a friendship? I’ve been in my first ever relationship for about three months long distance and it’s just… not working. We were best friends before but now he’s making comments to guilt me out of my future.

You do it was kindly and courteously as possible. Be gentle. Off him time away to think and heal, and be aware that if it falls through, it’s not your fault, and you did what you had to

if he's already trying to guilt you, he's not going to take the friend demotion very well

Tell him it’s over and that you “hope to be friends in the future.” Do NOT try to go from a couple to besties overnight. It never works. That’s how ppl either get back together or one starts resenting the other. Feel the separation, get used to it, allow both of you to FULLY move on emotionally, then you can be friends. If either of you would feel a way about hearing the others love escapades then it’s too early. If you feel you can’t share about your love life then it’s too early. Take time!

Don’t be friends, it will only make it harder for you to move on. You will be happier once they’re completely gone and you have no contact with them.
