Why does it seem like Americans are hyper obsessed with “being skinny” and “perfect body” “going to the gym” when a majority of the people here are fat?

America is one of the fattest countries in the world, but you dont see it as much online because fitter people or people trying to get there are more willing to put themselves out there

anyone promoting or encouraging being fat is fat themselves. i've been both fat and fit in my life and getting in shape was the best decision in my life

that’s nothing compared to korea. they have annual weight ins and if ur too “fat” then its either ur required or recommended to go to the gym more

Everyone is obsessed with their body and trying to be thin, but most people cant afford to buy diverse fruits and vegetables, so most people are financially constrained to eating super processed high calorie foods. And cities arent walkable so most people arent getting exercise AND it costs money to go out to a store and even more money to go to a health food store. And the government wants people starving and without brain power or sick and funding the insurance companies.

Well scientifically it all stems from the olden times where if u physically unfit then u were less likely to survive and more likely to pass on less than adequate genes, natural selection is always going to be involved no matter how advanced or smart a species becomes

Because the older generations are fat and the younger ones don’t want to be like them

Skinny and fit people have been idealized since Ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome, it’s weird that people think these ideals started only 200 years ago

That’s statistically untrue btw. There’s plenty of other countries that have WAY more fat people per capita than the US

It’s just jealousy or self hatred trying to be projected onto others, ignore it lol everyone should just live their own life

Me personally I enjoy running fast but if someone enjoys being physically unable to do so, that’s their choice I guess

Because it shouldn’t be the norm to be so big that you have to pay for 2 tickets when you get on a plane 😭 that’s not fascist, that’s just goofy

there is nothing wrong with taking care of ur health. some people see it as lifting 5 days a week. others see it as eating healthier. while others see it as less sugar intake. it really just depends on the person and how their body is

It’s also not “daring to exist outside of conformity”, it’s “willingly committing passive suicide” so yes ofc I’m going to be concerned that being fat is considered “body positivity”

it shouldn’t be the norm, it’s a serious health problem, but fatphobia still is definitely rooted in fascist values

at least they rnt stealing the seat. i could care less if someone has to buy two tickets because that’s none of my business it’s the fact that if i buy a seat and someone says it’s theirs then that’s when we r going to have problems

Well yeah but they didn’t even mention fat phobia. They just said the desire to have a healthy lifestyle is fascist

Also why do we even call these things phobia, that’s always confused me. Nobody is scared of fat people lol

it shouldn’t but sometimes someone has a genetic mutation that makes it harder for someone to loose weight or someone could of looked fit and healthy but had to get put on a medication that makes them gain weight.

Harder yes, impossible no and it’s been proven by doctors many times that the genetic things play a very minimal factor. It makes you more prone to becoming fat or staying fat, but it’s still the person’s behavior that causes them to become or stay that way, not the genes

Yalls reading comprehension skills are wack. Who let you pass third grade? It's easy to miss at this point but this is the third screenshot from the article about the *obsession* with weight loss, which is more often than not done in an unhealthy way like taking Ozempic so that you don't absorb nutrients or starving yourself. Equating the spectrum of skinny to healthy and the spectrum of fat to needing two seats on an airplane shows how braindead you are.

and they immediately jump to saying I'm fat when my BMI is healthy and not overweight, I'm not even plus size, and I spent most of my life being socially rewarded for being underweight due to my chronic stomach issues that finally got resolved.. oh and I was on a hike for most of the 4 hour gap in between my comment and my reply lol

Well, being overweight significantly increases health risks: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, various cancers, etc. it’s a very extensive list. That being said, it’s also unhealthy to be underweight, oh no is that skinny phobic? No, it’s just being honest and not lying and enabling unhealthy behaviors to coddle and protect feelings and laziness. https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/adult-obesity-facts/index.html#:~:text=At%20a%20glance,BMI%20of%2040.0%20or%20higher.

all true, and none of that is a counter argument to fascism rewarding thin bodies regardless of the actual circumstances surrounding someone's size
