I think it's more about the mechanism. if I had a pouch with a little nozzle and drank apple sauce from it, I would say I drank it. if I had the same apple sauce with a spoon, I'd say I ate it

A smoothie is a liquid but grits are a solid. The line falls somewhere slightly thicker than milkshake
