From my experience, it’s a mix of inexperience and genuine attraction. The previous lack of female companionship/a genuine deep bond that people assume has to be romantic. I’ve always been the type too worried i’ll ruin a friendship to mention anything though so I don’t know if I can talk for them. Asking for sex is crazy though

I don’t have that issue but also a lot of my friends are queer so there’s really no strict divide. Once you could date any gender it stops mattering

and i don’t know if this is somehow my fault—that i don’t understand the differences between male friendship and female friendship—or if this is the strict reality, that guys cannot be only friends with a woman

I'll be your friend. I'm not trying to hook up and only want a relationship if they make it crazy obvious they're into me like that.
