why do people get so defensive when you say god isn’t real or you don’t believe in god?

Because they base their entire personality around it and don’t want to challenge their own world views

yeah it's like an enormous pillar of people's perceptions of the world. Also it's pretty common to think that without a belief in God, someone can't have any system of morality.

when you say that god isn’t real they interpret it as you trying to “debunk” their religion or that you’re trying to provoke them, other times it’s that they feel the need to defend god’s honor. the people who get mad about others not believing in their god (or at least a god) have often been made to associate religion with morality and believing that those who don’t subscribe to (their) religion must be backhanded and/or evil.

If the only thing stopping you from being immoral is the threat of eternal damnation, then you were never a good person to begin with lol

I agree, but many people think that way regardless.
