I’m so sorry for everyone at Brown and everyone with loved ones there. I go to UVA and I’ve experienced four shelter in place orders here. No one should ever have to experience this and I hate that it’s so common. The lack of communication from admin (seems like Brown is saying/knows nothing) makes it so much scarier. What you just said is somewhat already in place. Other than government buildings, schools and universities have some of the strictest anti-gun policies/laws…which is why they’re often targeted. Evil individuals who do things like this are weak and only prey on the innocent. It’s very uncommon that they attempt something where they might face resistance from a good guy with a gun.

And to top this off…if you “ban” guns, the only people who wouldn’t have them are the ones who follow the law. Those using guns for illegal acts are not gonna give up their weapons because it’s suddenly illegal to have them. So then, you make the law abiding citizen who did give up their guns more vulnerable to gun violence.

That’s because it’s illegal to bring a gun on a college campus. The “good guys” follow that law and are defenseless. The “bad guys” don’t care. There’s a reason mass shooters target schools, malls, and concerts. They know nobody else will be armed to stop them so they can do as much harm as possible.

There was an incident a few years ago near where I grew up where a shooter pulled a gun and another guy who was concealed carrying capped him like immediately. Made the shot from a good distance without collateral damage too. This was also all in a “gun-free” zone, by the way. Thankfully the one guy ignored that because he probably saved a lot of people.

Hes right though, we have far more guns than people, if we simply banned guns then only the people who do the legal thing and hand them in will follow the law. Most crimes are committed with illegal firearms anyways (ghost guns, not being the owner). Theres not much we can do

How come all the places with the strictest gun control have the most shootings? He was definitely mentally ill but mental health in general is not to blame. When you see people glorifying the deaths of others and when people cheer for violence, it creates the perfect storm for the opportunistic cowards. not all gun control is meant to stop all gun violence. it's a chilling effect. 2 week holds on new purchases help cut down on suicide and heat-of-the-moment domestic violence. mental health screenings help cut down the number of mentally unstable people obtaining guns. background checks help cut down the number of criminally intentioned people obtaining them 21+ limits on alcohol and tobacco don't prevent all minors from obtaining those intoxicants yet they still help *drastically* reduce it

it's interesting to consider whether or not the shooters themselves are democrats. as we've seen from many shootings, shooters often target places like non-white churches or majority black grocery stores which tend to be in more urban areas. we've seen people cross state and county lines to engage in attacks. so whether or not it happened in a city doesn't necessarily mean it's a democrat/blue issue - it may be the exact opposite; conservatives targeting blue (particularly non-white) areas

Atleast ours was a targeted shooting. The guy only wanted to kill one guy. Couldve happened in his house and it wouldnt have been as scary on campus. Theirs was a mass shooting which is super scary. Also ours our police force immediately got on scene and was atleast comforting

Your friend was not a price I’m willing to pay for our current system. We need thoughtful regulations now. We can preserve the second amendment while also making it harder for this to happen. And we need to improve mental healthcare access and set up tip lines and early detection systems to catch individuals who show early warning signs. We need strict regulations that mirror countries where this rarely happens/doesn’t happen at all. The tragedy in Australia was the only shooting they’ve suffered all year. The shooting at Brown is just another one on the pile—we’ve had more shootings than days of the year. When will it end? When will we see that their systems work and ours doesn’t?

Regulations won’t help, the USA isn’t like australia or any other country. We have more guns than people, even if we enact strict regulations it won’t change. Even states with strict regulations still face gun violence higher than other places of equal size in the world, it’s a strictly American problem that needs an AMERICAN solution, we cant copy

"regulations won't help" is what people said about seat belt laws, alcohol and tobacco age limits, and nearly every other regulation on purchasing or using dangerous/harmful products. yet here we are with fewer car related deaths/permanent injuries, fewer minors becoming lifelong addicts or dying from consumption related diseases, starting fires, or getting hurt from things like PM medicines, etc. you can't make that prediction and saying it with confidence doesn't make it true

St. Louis, MO: Around 38 per 100k. Baltimore, MD & Washington, D.C.: Both have high rates, often around 36 per 100k. I’m going to emphasize “causing” because correlation is not at all sufficient evidence for anything.
