One google search verifies that impulsive risky behaviors are a symptom of a manic episode. Not everyone’s manic episode looks the same, and mental illness does not have one costume.

people in the comments not realizing that mental illnesses are ILLNESSES and aren't always all pretty and romanticized like you see on social media. sure most people with bipolar disorder never experience this but it's different for everyone and some people are a lot sicker than others. it's great that you've never been so out of touch with reality to experience something like this but he has. it doesn't negate the damage he did but it is absolutely an acceptable explanation for his behavior.

Not a kanye fan but also bipolar I myself. I don’t think a lot of people understand the extent of these manic episodes sometimes. Mental illness isn’t all staring out the window poetically and starving yourself, it can come with very real delusions that can happen on this scale, especially to someone who already has some sort of feeling of grandiosity. It’s not my place to forgive him because I’m not jewish, but I think it’s an issue a lot more multifaceted than many think.

all “nazism” aside, this was very well written and a very good explanation of what bipolar disorder is and what it does to someone. i have struggled with many a hypomanic episode and have 2 uncles who both struggle with bipolar disorder worse than me. one of my uncles, during an episode, became convinced he was being poisoned with arsenic and was CONVINCED it was my mother, his biological sister who basically raised him. my other uncle (same side) has had a few episodes and a few moments…

I think a team of therapists and press control wrote this. I also think it’s mostly true. It’s very obvious based on his beliefs before and after going on this tyrade that this was a product of his mental illness. Nazis are notorious for targeting people with mental illnesses. Bipolar disorder doesn’t “turn you into a nazi” but it does make you gravitate towards the extreme and it makes you incredibly vulnerable to manipulation. This should never have gotten any media attention (1)

mental illness is defined by symptoms that cause harm to oneself and others. We as a society have done an ok job accepting that harmful behaviors towards oneself can be understood through mental illness. we have struggled to have that acceptance for symptoms that harm others. This is why people tend to demonize personality disorders. it is absolutely true that any number of disorders can make it harder act like “a good person.” that doesn’t mean that it is impossible, or that no one does.

As someone studying mental health psychology… you should know that the acronym for Bipolar Disorder is BP. Often seen as BP1 or BP2 to differentiate between the two types of bipolar. BPD is borderline personality disorder. Bipolar is a mood disorder while Bordeline is a personality disorder. Please look into that and do the proper research. Also, yeah… bipolar doesn’t inherently turn you into a nazi. HOWEVER it can intensify pre-existing problematic beliefs.

Bipolar delusions are absolutely not a reflection of the bipolar person’s ideology that is so dangerous to believe. Bipolar disorder can create delusions based on previously held beliefs, it can create delusions based on things you’re scared of (ie believing you are the devil), and it can create delusions based on things you don’t believe but have vaguely heard about before. The one thing everyone has at end of the day to hold onto is who they are. The horrifying thing about delusions is that they take that away. When I have hallucinations I can at least trust myself even if I can’t trust what Im seeing around me. When I have delusions, I can’t trust myself. My thoughts are no longer mine, it’s a nightmare.

Im sorry you did not get a good role model for how to have a respectful conversation. That’s not fair. You should have been treated better so you could learn to treat others better. A good place to start is learning how to empathize without forgiving.

A couple things to mention in this. Being bipolar (coming from a diagnosed bipolar 1) doesn’t MAKE YOU racist, antisemitic, homophobic, etc. It’s kind’ve like alcohol. You get drunk and say and do a bunch of dumb shit, but in the end you were thinking about saying and doing that shit to begin with. Being manic makes you tweak out and not realize wtf you’re doing, yes, I’m aware. Also, jewish isn’t a race. It’s a form of ethnoreligious identity that encompasses the history, culture and ancestry..

I’m not saying we should forget all of the terrible things he did or said, I just think we should think a little more deeply with how we view people. You’re not the same person when you’re in a severe mental episode. It’s 100% up to you if you want to forgive him or not, just remember he’s just a man

the thing with kanye is that he’s super rich and powerful with hundreds of yes men surrounding him. that might seem like the dream to most ppl but for a bipolar person, that’s one of the worst positions to be in. kanye doesn’t suffer any legitimate consequences for his actions like a normal person would, so he has way too much freedom, which leads to him doing crazy stuff like what you described.
