Hantavirus is not joke 30-50% fatality rate in the west *with* treatment. COVID was 1-10% (depending on strain and vaccine availability) and it still killed MILLIONS worldwide, and just for perspective, the Black Death was 60-70% and wiped out 1/3 of Europe. They need to go to an isolated island and only interact with specialists from the WHO.

U should research this disease cuz clearly u haven’t. The disease rarely spreads from person to person, it is mainly spread by contact with infected rodent waste, so the threat of them docking isn’t ANYWHERE near as high as Covid or any flu virus. Secondly, sacrifice the few to potentially save the many is fucking morbid. Try ur best to save everyone always

upvote 52 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #12 20w

Well based off that, if only infected rodents can give it to humans that means there are rodents on the boat? It’s infected 3 people leading them to die either they had this disease or received it while on the boat, then apparently 4 others have been affected so I can see where it may sound like it can be transmitted human to human then considering viruses mutate….We don’t have enough info yet obviously, even the news headlines are not helping with over exaggeration of instant death 😭

The high mortality rate leading to less spread bc people are too sick to move is just speculation. Truth it if that wad the case then the black death wouldn’t have done shit, but instead it wiped out half of europe. Why? Because people don’t give a shit and will go around anyways. Or it spreads to their caregivers who then can spread it more before they enter the death stage. Proper PPE can still fail and people can also do the thing called disobeying quarantine bc they don’t care.

You are under the assumption the sick people actually understand disease and care enough to obey quarantine, which from what we’ve seen from covid is clearly not the case. You should volunteer to get on the ship to care for them if you care that much but don’t go around sacrificing other people.

The black plague still exists u fucking idiot. It’s just not a problem in modern civilization because we don’t live in literal shit and piss. In ancient Europe ppl used to live on top of each other in extremely disgusting cities with both human and animal waste all over the place, THAT is why it spread so much. Those circumstances are not an issue now. It’s the same with this disease.

You can’t keep people on a ship that is having a virus spread through rodent excrement (meaning most likely a contaminated food source) to quarantine because the virus is already present, there is no quarantine and if you force people to stay on said boat and consume food from the on board pantry’s then anyone who does become infected and dies is on your hands, because you forced them to stay on a boat with limited food and known possible contamination in the food available.

Despite you arguing to not generalize a group of people, you do have to acknowledge that poorer people (people like where I live where it’s mostly farm hands and then a couple rich farm owners) don’t always have the time or the money to handle it, cleaning supplies cost money, gloves cost money, masks cost money, and every minute they spend trying to clean it is a minute they aren’t able to make money.

Yes this. My dad works in construction and spends a lot of time renovating and fixing up super old cabins. He’s lucky enough to be able to take the proper precautions. But I know so many that don’t have the same privilege

Doesn’t account for mutations, covid went through rapid mutations at the early stage. This can do the exact same don’t even joke lad

bro please read the paper! the literal POINT OF THE PAPER is discussing the frequency OF THE MUTATIONS in this specific virus! we have known about hantaviruses since the 50s and the andes strain specifically since the 90s! covid-19 was literally first discovered in 2019!

COVID-19 is the coronavirus which predates the 19th.

counterpoint: COVID-19 is one specific virus, SARS-CoV-2, which was discovered in December 2019, that exists in a family of viruses called coronaviruses, which have been around since the 50s.

It’s the strain that is transmitted between humans

I have acknowledged that it is possible to spread between humans so idk why ur bringing that up as a “gotcha”. Spread between humans is still very rare and requires close contact for a long period of time such as living together in a cruise cabin. Transmission is not a big concern, this disease is not a public health threat

Anomalies happen. It is a disease and ppl can get it. Idk what to tell u. That fact doesn’t make it common or a big concern. There’s 100’s of thousands of cases of this disease a year, it’s not a public health threat

You totally missed the point. Yes it is possible to get with any exposure but it’s very rare and typically requires prolonged, close contact. This is not a disease that is highly transmissible, this is not a public health threat. There are hundreds of thousands of cases a year, it’s rly not a problem

facts, it’s not even a pubic health threat. More of an overall health threat than just in the pubic region
