the scientists loved her, their children played with her before she left, the world mourned her absence. even in the midst of the most tension-filled international paranoia, people shed tears over a creature supposedly on the “enemy” side. rest in peace Laika, you united humanity for a moment in time, which is more than most humans can say.
Who gives a flying fuck if it’s science or not. They put an ANIMAL IN SPACE! DOES THAT NOT FALL UNDER ANIMAL CRUELTY?! Maybe they should’ve sent one of their own and asked the family of that person how they felt after their family member died in orbit. What the fuck is wrong with the human race 🙄
Hey so that’s still animal abuse, and in the science community that’s still not condoned. There were plenty of other options they could have done but they slowly and brutally killed an animal instead. This type of shit isn’t allowed in science, and is heavily frowned upon (also illegal in many countries now)
They have a point. If you think that Russia is the only country testing animals to a point where it’s animal cruelty, you’re kidding yourself. America technically doesn’t do it anymore, however American companies do, just to places where it’s legal/not illegal (yes there’s a difference)
There is a wikipedia page titled "animals in space" that says the US sent numerous monkeys and mice into space even before the Soviets sent Laika. And it was for research, not fun. It's horribly cruel to send animals to their deaths like this but the research was necessary for space travel.
Look these up. They’re just as cruel: Harry Harlow's Sensory Deprivation Experiments Edward Taub's Monkey Experiments LSD Experiment on an Elephant Beagle Puppy Experiments at UPenn Beagle Puppy Experiments at Liberty Beagle Puppy Experiments at the NIAID (Beagles are used a lot because they are they forgive people the most)
it would’ve advanced science even further if they had at least attempted to plan for her return. they ended up wasting more scientific potential by just sending her up there and then spending more materials and time on entirely separate missions where they tried to send living creatures up and also have them return
The scientists and engineers involved were given 4 weeks to design and build one of the first life support systems ever used in space, to see if it was possible for organisms to survive in space. They intended to euthanize her with poisoned food after 7 days at the end of the mission, as the technology for atmospheric reentry didn’t exist yet. She died 4 orbits in because 4 weeks wasn’t enough time to develop a reliable temperature control system, it didn’t work properly, and she overheated.
The goal was to see if it was possible for complex organisms to survive launch and radiation in space, and they were given 4 weeks by the government to design and launch the first life support system in space. The plan was to euthanize her after 7 days with poisoned food, as they didn’t have the technology for reentry. They tracked her heart rate and actions the whole time, gathering data until she died when the rushed temperature control system failed. They didn’t just kill a dog for fun
So, in many instances people who are not self absorbed assholes will talk about things that make them sad and promote kindness to all creatures for the sake of expressing a thought or idea. You kind of outed yourself there for only showing empathy or contributing to a conversation when it makes you look good or boosts your fragile ego
Sure there’s nothing wrong with showing empathy. But in not in any way of from “devastating” or “atrocious” or “gut wrenching”. That dog is probably not even aware of its own existence. There are literally family’s being separated in Ukraine - wives from the man they love, kids alike. Answer me how would the world or anyone’s life be any better if a random dog (that anyway had 2 years max in it) lived?
Dawg it is entirely possible for multiple things to be terrible and wrong. Animal cruelty is atrocious and devastating regardless of what came from it. What’s happening in Ukraine is also devastating and awful. The two aren’t comparable, but both are tragic and wrong. Why can’t both be a problem in your mind?? How does disliking animal cruelty equate to anything about Ukraine??
Hmm cornball. Is that all you could come up with or is that all that can fit in your vocabulary? Last I checked I didn’t ask for an opinion when I commented, I stated my feelings. That dog is still a dog, something that is commonly kept as a house pet. Regardless of if it had a home or not it still deserved just as much love as any of your more than likely purse dogs. Unless you’re a cat person then that would explain all I really care to know about you as a person. Have a lovely night 🩷
I’m providing context, with the goal of demonstrating that the very limited information in the original post doesn’t represent the story faithfully. The OP intended to give the reader the impression that the people involved launched a dog into space for politics (true), they were too lazy to plan a safe return into the mission architecture (they didn’t have the time or technology necessary) and that she died to negligence (it was mechanical failure due to tech and time constraints).
That said, was it worth it for the information they gained from the mission? No. Several of the scientists involved said as much. But it’s not as simple as the post portrays it. It should be the starting point for a meaningful discussion about the efficacy of animal testing, when it’s permissible, why we have rules surrounding it, etc. We’ve come a long way since then, and the fact that we can point to this as unethical today is a testament to that fact.
I would argue that the mission’s intended design is much more understandable and arguably more ethical than how it ended up playing out in reality when it failed. But it should never have flown in the first place with how plagued with issues it was, and absolutely would never be allowed today, which is a very good thing. Sorry about splitting up what I had to say into four comments. My Hatred for the character limit cannot be adequately described at this moment in time.
ohhhh my god this is an incredible waste of time. do you think that pigs in the meat industry don’t suffer their entire lives due to incredibly poor conditions? there’s animal abuse happening all around you every second of every day but you’re moralizing about a single dog that died 70 years ago.
Hey, you vegan dip shit, they still aren’t being slowly burnt alive. That’s animal abuse. Shut the fuck up with your veganism and clearly trying to negate the point that in science today if a scientist did that they would be arrested and then blacklisted that this type of animal abuse is not condoned in the science community now or then.
