The people (by popular voting) vote for who represents them at the state, local, and to an extent at the national level. Those are democratic processes and shows we do indeed have democracy. Our democracy was never perfect, but it’s hard to argue that it wasn’t functioning a whole lot better 60 years ago

You recognize there is a difference between one person being bought and the whole government being bought right? The modern problem is scale; it’s the entire government at this point, rather than individuals abusing the system. Also, I really don’t understand why “democracy has always been broken” works as a response to “our democracy is breaking”; the end result is the same, and we should be pushing for better either way

I get it, but imo the argument is pedantic; at the end of the day, we both agree there is a problem and we both want there to be a house. Why waste time arguing about the current state of the house when we could be working together to fix whatever damage it has taken?

There are absolutely ways to create more robust corruption protections that can catch people acting immorally, regardless of their personal penchant for taking bribes. And again, the problem we have now is scale; a few politicians being bought by the rich is *much* preferable to the entire government; pretending like those are the same is just giving in to nihilism

Because the government was just more effective. I suppose technically it’s impossible to know, but the important metric isn’t just the behind the scenes numbers that we don’t know, it’s the output. You can always assume every government every is corrupt, and so nothing ever matters and give into nihilism, but that ignores that many systems are running functionally better than the one we are under now, meaning that real change for the better absolutely can be made
