Modern phones use ai for the moon they basically paint a picture into what your camera actually sees

upvote 26 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> _catt 18w

the moon has gravity that attracts an atmosphere, its just not nearly as dense or as large as Earth’s is. But it is enough that it will affect light if you look through miles of it.

upvote 42 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #5 18w

I mean yikyak’s quality isn’t that good

upvote -1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #46 18w

thats not the moons atmosphere lol its our own atmosphere being lit up + chromatic aberration on the edge

upvote 49 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #51 18w

Yeah, im aware the blue edge is chromatic aberration. Thats not what im talking about. Also no you arent seeing our atmosphere being lit up in this image. I mean technically you are looking through it but in this photo it wouldnt be visible except in that it slightly modifies the black levels across the entire image uniformly.

upvote 18 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #51 18w

The bright spot in the top left and the streak just below/right of the moon is from the lens, not the atmosphere

okay, so… they’re sending a picture FROM OUTERSPACE. it’s not going to look super clean. it’s a spaceship IN OUTERSPACE

upvote 6 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #54 18w

Space has the best viewing conditions 😂 its literally the CLEANEST view, thats why hubble is up there. It’s just boring lighting conditions + probably didnt want to bring a heavy telescope/camera

upvote -1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #51 18w

you literally just proved my point. it’s not from a telescope. it’s from a ship with a goal of transportation. also, we can give a little grace. it’s not like the moon is in their hand or something 😭

upvote 5 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #46 18w

yes the camera adds some bloom, but ive taken pics of the moon before and the humidity in our atmosphere does create a sort of bright halo around the moon, very similar to bloom

default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #32 18w

Moon is real everything abt nasa isnt tho

upvote 2 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #42 18w

It has been canonically proven and documented in textbooks since like 4th grade tht the moon has no atmosphere

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous 18w

Everyone knows tht the moon is just an observation satellite that the aliens use to monitor us from , otherwise why is it tht we only ever see the 1 side of it

Anonymous replying to -> #3 18w

Good point. thought they were talking about the conditions in space, but data links are the biggest problem. Still, you can get some amazing pictures from there with a small setup, for example voyager’s pictures of jupiter. It’s also true that things usually look “fake” in space due to the lighting. Not saying they should do better, just giving reasons as someone who has a degree in this. It WILL look super “clean” though, just not very artistic or high res

upvote 4 downvote
default user profile icon

lotta assholes on yikyak. the answer is that the moon is so much bigger and brighter that the stars dont even show up due to camera exposure. same reason you cant see the stars when the sun is out.

Yeah not to mention perspective… stars are super far away from the moon. You see them close on earth because of how light travels, but they are nowhere near that close in real life.

Also; im pretty sure the sun is the closest star to the moon! So you are (in a way) still seeing the nearest star (reflecting light off of the moon anyways)

upvote 4 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #3 18w

the sun is the closest star at ~93 million miles, the next closest star to us is alpha centauri at around 4.5 lightyears away!!
