imo the government shouldn’t have the right to execute. there are plenty of criminals that “deserve” death, but no justice system is perfect and therefore execution should never be an option. i believe pedophile rapists deserve death, but i also believe that the state should not have the right to kill. innocent people have died on death row, therefore it needs to be abolished
That’s fucked this guy just destroyed the justice that 548 families fought for. like did he review each case then decide they should live? Like each case would be different a 2nd degree single homicide by gunshot to the head is significantly different from like a 1st degree homicide with 28 stab wound
God brings people into life to teach those around them, to show them that there is a different path in life, one of forgiveness and grace. there is a path in life following Jesus and the pain and suffering he endured just to exonerate ourselves from the sins we have committed and will commit. no one is created perfectly and no one is perfect. god gave us free will so that we will form a intimate and unique relationship with him out of our own choice. the deepest sin we can achieve is
Hm let’s see here, we’re not talking about the woman beaters and rapists in Palestine so that serves no purpose. We’re talking about the death penalty. And let me make this clear. If you rape and murder you should die. You should die the worst death imaginable. If it were up to me I would starve them to death. But tell me if you disagree that child rapists and murders shouldn’t die. I would love to hear you say that.
The fact that you think the cost of capital punishment is the price of a BULLET is genuinely embarrassing. 😭 It’s the trials, appeals, legal representation, and decades of incarceration that make executions so expensive. You’re arguing economics while forgetting the entire justice system exists...
Not everyone who gets put on death row is executed within the same year, or even within a few years of their sentencing. Oftentimes, because of how long and expensive these legal processes are people on death row will be there for decades before their execution. At that point it’s better to just put them on a life without parole sentence
You went from debating capital punishment to accusing someone of being a rapist because they oppose state executions? That’s an astonishing failure of reasoning. Opposing the governments authority to execute people isn’t defending violent criminals. You can believe someone deserves lifelong imprisonment without believing the state should have the power to kill them. Please learn the difference before inventing increasingly disturbing hypotheticals…
Yes but I don’t believe in lifelong imprisonment. If you’ve done something so heinous that they think the best solution is to keep hou away from polite society for the rest of your life, then why are you being kept alive? Explain that. If you are such a danger to society at large, why is it better to remove you from society and put you in a box versus executing you?
Dude crazy accusations to toss out for thinking that the government shouldn’t get to decide who lives or dies Besides, being locked in a box going mad and being brutally assaulted regularly by other inmates should be enough punishment to make them atone. Death is too good for pedophile rapists imo
First of all the government doesn’t decide. A. Jury. Of. Your. Peers. Will. Decide. Your. Fate. We live in a democracy that’s what the legal process is for. Second of all, do you know what prison is like? 3 meals and a bed sounds pretty nice for a person who would commit such an evil act. They can rot in hell instead.
Is the success in the room with us? Dude is a clown who has achieved literally nothing. He’s been talking about ending homelessness for like 15-18 years. There are more homeless people in California now than when he began his political career. And every year he says the system has failed the people. Mfer you are the system.
except who determines which crimes see a jury?? the government, so it’s not just ppl. and regardless it’s so much more affordable and feasible to not have the death penalty, it causes so much bloating in the judicial system. also i feel like the chance that the government can take an innocent persons life away bc of a wrongful conviction outways any desire i have for the worst criminals who commit heinous crimes to be punished with death.
mind you…. that’s already a thing. slavery was abolished for all americans except for incarcerated peoples. and that’s not a good thing. if you look at taylor farms, the main culprit of the cyclospora outbreak, they used this labor, paying incarcerated people cents per hour. when we let companies take advantage of people in these conditions it allows shit like that outbreak to happen
I don't *think* executions are more expensive, I KNOW they are more expensive. This has been proven many times. By left leaning groups trying to bad capital punishment, right wing groups trying to say it saves money and getting clowned, and by researchers who were just curious. They all got the same answer: the death penalty is more expensive than paying for life in prison.
I don’t think we should prioritize executing people when our entire justice system as it currently exists desperately needs to be uprooted and recreated. America has the highest population of incarcerated people and it’s not because Americans commit more crimes but because our judicial system believes that harsh punishment is the only solution to the mistakes that we make.
You think they put people on death row because they are impoverished and marginalized??????? Are you serious???? You think they walk around poor neighborhoods arresting people and putting them on death row? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. If you are on death row you have done something to get yourself there. No?
You’re misconstruing what I said. They’re not on death row because they’re poor. But people convicted of blue collar crimes statistically face harsher sentences and longer prison sentences than those that commit white collar crimes. Also, yes, not being able to afford adequate legal defense basically fucks you over in court from the get go if your lawyer doesn’t give a fuck about you because they’re not getting paid enough to
i'm really glad you're not in public services (and concerned if you are.) there are so many ways the justice system can get it wrong, and allowing execution after only two appeals would enable murder. the system is harder on pocs, addicts, and the impoverished. this means that if we made executions easy, we would basically be killing off a whole bunch of people who were just dealt a bad hand in life. also, it sounds like you have some personal anger- why are you so eager to k!ll people??
The death penalty is more expensive because anti-death-penalty campaigners have spent decades introducing tedious regulations and more expensive procedures, literally *because* it allows them to make this point. Before the era of death penalty = life in prison but we finally kill the guy when he’s 80 after all appeals exhaust (with a super expensive chemical procedure), it was much much much cheaper to do the death penalty compared to life sentences. Educate yourself idk
Because it's a very difficult line. If we allow the death penalty for this and that, who's to say other things shouldn't be acceptable as things for the death penalty? It could lead us down a path of societal regression. Whereas letting them rot for life allows them to either be punished, wasting less money, and if they're later exonerated they would have a higher chance of still being alive and seeing daylight outside prison
prisoners that aren’t on death row have jobs. a lot of those jobs are contracted with companies unrelated to the prison. they make literal cents an hour, basically doing slave labor for ramen and water. death row prisoners do no labor and live entirely off the government, they cost us so much money NOT including the insane costs of execution
That’s 1989 we are in 2026, do you know how rare it is for someone to be punished for a crime they didn’t commit? We have so many more ways to prove a crime now than we did 37 years ago. That shit doesn’t happen anymore and they definitely wouldn’t kill someone without hard evidence. Find a more recent case and then get back to me.
Or if you want a current case look into Michael Taylor in Alabama set to be an executed soon. He is on death row for a murder he committed in 1991 when he was only 19 years old, although he has had a rebirth of faith after spending decades in prison, he is still going to be executed.
If you think igaf if he had a “rebirth” then you are crazy. He beat and old couple to death with a metal pole. He’s actually supposed to die today. Good. Justice is served. Or is it not? Are you defending this murderer? If I go out and beat both of your grandparents to death during a robbery are you going to defend me to? I don’t think so.
He’s spent over half of his life in prison for a crime he committed when he was young and deeply regrets. Is that not punishment enough? I am not the victims family, but I like to think I have enough forgiveness and love in my heart to forgive those that want to be better people. I think we are all worth more than our worst mistakes
Look into his case. His mother died when he was 3, he was repeatedly abused as a child and he was a Vietnam war veteran who was the sole survivor in his platoon, afterwards suffering from severe headaches and attempted suicide many times. He did not get the help he needed and made a terrible mistake. None of these relevant facts were brought up during his trial and he was executed. Please look into his case before calling me insane
It’s not that it’s a lot easier, it’s that death penalty inmates are required to have an appeal (even if they don’t want it) which makes it far more expensive. Just do life without parole. Bad prison food, harsh inmate presence, no last meal of choice (their victim didn’t get one), they have to spend far longer in a cell
specifically in the case of 🍇 (although i wouldn’t be shocked if this applied to other crimes), it’s actually been shown that the certainty of being caught is a more effective deterrent than the severity of the punishment. something i found interesting is that increasing the severity of the potential punishments for 🍇 could increase the severity of the crimes committed. if someone thinks the justice system won’t catch them or that they won’t face the consequences, it doesn’t matter to them
There’s actually a really good reason why rapists don’t get the death penalty. It’s because if they were, it’d be harder to get victims to testify than it already is! Making the death penalty the sentence for rapists prevents them from getting caught. You’re advocating for more rapists to go unreported.
have you ever thought about why it’s disproportionate? bc the people committing the crimes are black and or low income and have you ever thought that you wouldn’t need a public defender if they never committed the crime in the first place? but they did and someone who was actually truly innocent paid the price
People are presenting genuine points to you and you’re just responding with things like “it’s just better to remove them from earth” or “ok maga.” Thoughtful people have the ability to genuinely consider others perspectives and either present a genuine counterpoint or concede on certain topics that they agree with. If your opinion was nuanced at all or based on anything concrete, you would have no trouble doing this.
what? this is a stupid sentence. ofc we would want them to die. that doesn’t mean the government should be allowed to do it. if someone hit me I would probably want to beat them up, that doesn’t mean I think the government should go around beating up people who commit crimes In this hypothetical you presented, I would also probably want to burn this person’s house to the ground. Should we give the government the power to burn down the houses of criminals?
Exactly, it’s not about murderers, rapists, abusers, and depraved individuals not deserving death as justice; it’s about a deeply flawed system that, in practice, routinely produces miscarriages of justice. It is worse for an innocent person to be put to death than for a guilty person to go free.
Without getting into the reason why “black crime is higher,” the ratio of Black death penalties to white death penalties is MUCH higher than the rate of black to white crime. As of April, 40% on death row are black. 34% of executions since the 70s have been of black people. That sounds right to you?
Randy Kraft killed 16 young men and boys in Southern California and according to a scorecard they found, the number could be as high as 68. His sentence was commuted. Chester turner killed 14 women in the state of California, one of which was pregnant. His sentence was commuted. I could go on, but yikyak limits comment lengths. I can pull more if you’d like
Based on a 2024 study investigating 27000 cases of serious crimes, black people had a rate between 4.6 and 8.7 times higher than the general population, and Latinos have between 3.2 and 6.2 times higher. Also the ratio of death penalties for black on white homicide compared to white on homicide is 11.5:1. Pretty telling
Statistically black people are 13-14% of the population and commit 36% of violent crimes. I’m not making any racist statement here im echoing a statistic. Low income people are also proved to commit more crimes than higher income people there’s no exact number but it’s true. I’m just wondering if this sample that 75 is talking about is fair or not
That’s not the right answer. It’s because the justice system is broken that any crucial evidence presented in the court is often thrown out. The burden of proof is on the defendant and not the state. I am off for the death penalty, and we should, I don’t know, shoot them all, but then again there’s a risk of a third of them being innocent, and so commuting is the best option.
the burden of proof is defined in the constitution and it’s decided on by independent unbiased peers not the judge and if something is thrown out it MOST of the time is on the prosecution as they have to present evidence to the court by nature the defense essentially just needs to contest every piece of “evidence” they throw at them so the likelyhood of the DEFENSE having evidence thrown out is very low bc providing evidence is not the premises of the defenses job
Sorry! The death penalty effects low income and black individuals. Why would you waste your time money and resources to defend a client that’s a low income black individual causing crime in our country figure it out your argument is weak. The low income black individual doesn’t have resources. Why would the government waste their time on someone that has no resources
Btw black individuals commit disproportionately more crimes. Not to mention calling off all death penalties in the name of disproportionality is genuinely insane considering the heinous crimes some of these individuals committed. Thankfully many of these cases have to be reviewed by the California Supreme Court.
I don’t see the 36% statistic anywhere online. Regardless of your opinion on that though, as of April, 40 percent of people on death row were black. There is no way you could seriously justify that. Obviously they are being specifically targeted by the justice system (and many other systemic issues but that is the one at hand now).
the more you study true biology, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, and cell biology the more obvuous it becomes that there was a true conscious and all knowing being that created us in a certain specific way. too many impossibilities became possible. too many incidents lined up coincidentally for it to all just be an accident. if it all was than why isn’t there any other evidence of another life form evolving to our level.
it means you aren’t in the labor force at all, at least according to the Bureau of Labor statistics, who collects unemployment data. The BLS defines unemployment as “people who are jobless and looking for a job who are capable of working” In every day conversation the distinction does not matter but its important to know how its defined if we are discussing statistics.
one man lived throughout time. it is a fact that Jesus of Nazareth was a living person. you believe text books of old people, you believe the teachings left behind by plato, aristotle, sophocles, and any other ancient philosopher. but you deny the 40 different authors over 1500 years. which means some were alive after all the previous had died, and they all believed the same exact event happened in history. you play on common sense but only listen when it benefits your own beliefs.
it's not an opinion it's how the labor force is measured. children are not unemployed. full time students are not unemployed. retired ppl are not unemployed. it is a fact u must be looking for a job to be unemployed. this was covered in my soc 101 class freshman year and i'm a business major.
